The Group One Prix Ganay is the highlight of this weekend’s racing action. It is open to four-year-olds and above and is often used as an important stepping stone to bigger races throughout the season including the G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe (2400m).
Since its inception in 1889, the contest has seen multiple changes including location, distance and title. Originally contested over 2000m with the name, the Prix des Sablons either at the end of March or early April.
The race was abandoned throughout World War I but was run at Maisons-Laffitte in 1944 and 1945 at today’s race journey of 2100m. Saint Cloud hosted this Group One highlight in 2016 and 2017 when the Longchamp Grandstand was under construction and since, Chantilly was added to the list of hosts when Covid-19 forced the event to be delayed to June in 2020.
Renamed in memory of Jean de Ganay (1861–1948), a former president of the Société d'Encouragement, the race attracts high class fields. This year is no different and includes Gold Trip who finished third in last season’s G1 Grand Prix de Paris (2400m) and Magny Cours who managed an excellent third in the G1 Dubai World Cup (2000m) at Meydan (UAE) in March. Mogul represents the Aiden O'Brien team and the son of Galileo brings high class form inclduing success in the G1 Grand Prix de Paris (2400m) last September beating Gold Trip and victory in the G1 Hong Kong Vase (2400m) at Sha Tin in Hong Kong in December.
Cirrus des Aigles is the most successful horse to have featured in this Group One with three victories in 2012, 2014, 2015. The leading jockey title in the race goes to Yves Saint-Martin with six triumphs including Relko in 1964, Taj Dewan four years later, Rheingold in 1973, Allez France in both 1974, 1975 and Sagace a decade after.
André Fabre has been in flying form in this feature the past few years to become the leading trainer with six titles including Creator in 1990, Subotica two years later, Indian Danehill in 2000, Cutlass Bay a decade on, Cloth of Stars in 2017 and Waldgeist in 2019 (who went on to win the ‘Arc’).
The Leading owner with six wins is Marcel Boussac who found success in 1933 with Goyescas, Goya II in 1939 and 1940, Djebel two years later, Goyama in 1948 and Nirgal twelve months on.
Four-year-olds have dominated the G1 Prix Ganay (2100m) with six winning at that age in the last ten renewals including Sottsass (a subsequent Arc winner), Cracksman, Cloth of Stars, Dariyan, Pastorius and Planteur.
