R8 – G3 Prix de Barbeville (3100m)

Four-year-olds and above

Mickaël Barzalona

Cédric Rossi

Kendargent X Skallet

Skazino ran a career-best performance to win the G3 Prix de Barbeville (3100m) in decisive fashion, stretching right away from his rivals to produce an eyecatching victory on just his second start in Group company. The five-year-old sat off the pace in the early stages, with Mickaël Barzalona content to play a waiting ride. As the cards began to be shuffled entering the home turn, Skazino made a bold move down the outside and was pushed into the lead at the 400m marker. He kicked clear and kept on in determined fashion to put away his rivals. Sheraz (Sea The Stars) travelled well but had no answer to the stamina reserves of the winner, finishing a clear second.

Purchased by Paul Nataf for €22,000 at the October Yearling Sales in 2017 from Haras de Colleville, Skazino is a brother to the Listed-placed Skalletto and four-time G2 winner Skalleti, who notably scored in the G2 Prix d’Harcourt (2000m) at Longchamp last month. His dam is a half-sister to the Listed-placed Faylan. This victory gave his father, Kendargent (Kendor), first place as the leading sire of 2021 in France (based on winners and prize-money).

Thoroughly impressive racing over this distance for the first time, it would be no surprise to see Skazino stepped up in class, with a possible tilt at either the G2 Prix Vicomtesse Vigier (3100m) at Chantilly and/or the G2 Prix Kergorlay (3000m) at Deauville later in the season. If he proved up to that level a lofty target of the G1 Prix du Cadran (4000m) on Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe weekend could be on the horizon.
