The richest mounted trotting race in the world will unfold at Vincennes on Sunday. The €700,000 Prix de Cornulier (Gr 1) has attracted a large 18-runner field where 3 big players look well above the others. Titleholder Roxane Griff, last year’s runner-up Tiégo d'Etang and up and coming Group 1 Prix de Normandie winner Vittel de Brévol (photo) really look the part. Difficult to imagine the winner not being amongst that trio given their ability and form.

When Sweden’s Örjan Kihlström brought home Maharajah in the 2014 Prix d’Amérique, the smile that shone through his muddy face said it all. He had just fulfilled the dream of a lifetime, matching his 2003 Elitloppet victory, Scandinavia’s must-win equivalent. On his twelfth Amérique bid this year, Kihlström will be driving Solvato. His success last year added to a long list of winning foreign drivers. Since 1993, they have scored in 10 editions, notably with Belgian globetrotter Jos Verbeeck (4), Italian Giampaolo Minnucci (2) and Swede Helen Johansson (1), the only lady driver to have triumphed in the history of the race.

It will be a ninth Prix d’Amérique on January 25th for driver Franck Nivard. He has the best driver stats in the race since 2007 with a strike-rate of 62.5% in the first two! Twice in the first four with Kool du Caux (2007-2008), he struck gold in 2009 with a very tough win on Meaulnes du Corta, endorsing his reputation as a ‘catch-driver’.
