Alexis Pouchin, I have to keep my feet on the ground

Alexis Pouchin, winner of three Group 1 races over the last five weeks

Winner of three Gr.1’s this season, Alexis Pouchin is the revelation of the year. And there are still four months to go. He shared his thoughts with us last weekend in Deauville.

At the time of writing, Pouchin has notched up 83 successes, 64 in Jockey’s Championship terms. To illustrate the progress the young Chantilly native has made, his previous record was 52 victories, in 2020.

He has made a name for himself among his peers, and never fails to show up for the big occasion. Having learnt his trade while apprenticed to Yohann Gourraud and André Fabre, his first group success came aboard Simca Mille in the Prix d’Harcourt on 9 April at Longchamp. Confirmation came just over two months later when Mqse De Sévigné won the Gr.1 Prix Rothschild. He then provided Stéphane Wattel, a trainer who often calls on Pouchin’s services, with a first Gr.1 when Simca Mille lifted the Grand Prix de Berlin. Mqse De Sévigné subsequently followed up with Prix Jean Romanet victory.

Things changed at the end of 2022 when Mr. Wattel began to offer me more rides. After a good meeting at Cagnes-sur-Mer, he continued to support me. Simca Mille is obviously a fine example. Then, of course, Mr. Fabre, who offered me the ride on Mqse De Sévigné in the Rothschild.

After changing to my new agent, Jules Susini, things have moved on a lot. Previously, it was complicated. We have a good relationship and, over time, have become friends. He is always behind me, in the good times, and the bad.

Now, after these big wins, I need to keep my feet planted, stay humble, but it’s already in my nature, so it should be ok!
