Grand Steeple de Compiègne, a specialists’ affair

Canichette, leading contender in Saturday's Grand Steeple de Compiègne

Annual highlight on its jumps calendar, the Grade 2 Grand Steeple-chase de Compiègne takes centre stage on Saturday’s action-filled programme. For 5 year-olds and up, and run over 4100m, this coveted chase boasts a total prize fund of €236,000.

Louisa Carberry, who won with Gran Diose in 2022, sends out the improving Canichette who most recently romped to a 7½ lengths victory in the G.3 Prix de la Gascogne prep race, and will generate appreciable interest. Runner-up to her that day, Spes Militurf struggled at Auteuil during the spring, but returns to a track he appreciates and appears to have a good hand to play.

Winner over hurdles at Cheltenham last January, Gold Tweet won a Lyon-Parilly chase, authoritatively, on his return from the summer break and, unbeaten in two starts over fences at Compiègne, must be considered a leading contender.

François Nicolle’s duo of Happy Monarch and Glorice are here on their merits and, while unlikely to impose, should nevertheless hold their own. Course specialist, Geelong Sport, has solid black-type credentials and, while not a priority, is not one to be ignored either. It is also worth noting that Gold Tweet’s regular partner Johnny Charron has chosen to remain faithful to Bertrand Lefèvre’s mare on whom he has register all of her five career victories, including a Listed and a Grade 3 Chase earlier this season at Compiègne.

Chaillé-Chaillé’s only runner after Grandeur Nature’s forfeit, is Toscana Du Berlais, who won well here during the spring and, although yet to make his mark at this level, he will be hard to ignore considering the stable’s form.
