Bazire hopeful of speedy success on return to Argentan

12 August 2023

Jean-Michel Bazire and Elie De Beaufour all set for a big performance this Saturday

Although only nine have been declared, the smallest number since 1995, this Saturday’s edition of the Gr.2 Critérium de Vitesse de Basse-Normandie is nevertheless a highly-competitive affair. There is little doubt that Jean-Michel Bazire’s reinvigorated Elie De Beaufour will receive the majority of support even though surprisingly beaten by Elvis Du Vallon in the Gr.2 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardère at Enghien a fortnight ago.

This is just Elie de Beaufour’s second attempt at 1609m, Jean-Michel’s first drive at Argentan for more than four years, and to throw another, somewhat limiting, factor into the mix, only 2 horses in the past 20 editions have imposed from the 6-spot.

Confirmed over these shorter distances, boasting a fine turn of foot, and presently in excellent condition, Capital Mail has solid references in both his native Italy and France. He proved earlier in the year that he can race right-handed, and the engagement of Gabriele Gelormini will only enhance his prospects.

Elvis Du Vallon recently set his personal best of 1’09”6 in a Vincennes Gr.1, beaten by the aforementioned Capital Mail, but drawn wide on the outside, his initial strides will be crucial to the outcome.

Deus Zak won over a mile in Italy at 2, and confirmed with Enghien Gr.3 success the following summer. Presently in decent shape, he has nonetheless been handed a tough draw, but these contests being what they are, it would be unwise to rule him out.

Happy Valley has never been seen over shorter than 2100m, but has ample speed and will be one to watch. Fakir Du LoraultGirolamo and Impressionist would not be considered leading chances, but each is reined by a capable driver and it would be no surprise to see one or more picking up some prizemoney.
