Jump jockeys back on track

10 June 2023

James Reveley is back in action this Saturday at Auteuil

Respectively first and second in last year’s jump jockeys classification, James Reveley and Clément Lefebvre endured a difficult start to the 2023 season, involving spills, fractures and rehabilitation.

While the Englishman is back in action with three rides at Auteuil on Saturday, the road to recovery will be longer for Lefebvre.

Reveley’s fall occurred at Pau. His tibia injured, he nevertheless made a brief return during the spring before resigning himself to a more sensible stint on the sidelines. He was absent over the Grand Steeple weekend in order to return fully fit for his imminent comeback.

His agent, Giovanni Laplace, had this to say, “He was almost ready to ride at the Grand Steeple meeting but this meant he would be taking risks, not only to himself but also to those connections who count on his services. He gave himself the necessary time to heal properly and everything is in order now. He’s back in business on Saturday and will be riding Gran Diose in the Prix des Drags, and two others during the day, Rockadenn and Lucky One.” With Reveley giving thought to his career once he hangs up his boots, Laplace added, “What’s more, he has taken advantage of his time off to study for his trainer’s licence, his course finishing in late June.

Lefebvre, similarly represented by Laplace, also fell foul of jump racing’s perils. After a heavy fall in February at Fontainebleau, he too has had to tolerate time off from his passion. “Clément has come home from his rehab. Everything is fine. His x-rays are good and everything comes off at the beginning of July. After his stitches have healed, he’ll be back race-riding at the end of July, early August. He’s getting married this month, so he’ll be able to enjoy his honeymoon!
