Watch Him looking for a third consecutive success in Defi du Galop contest at Bordeaux

On Saturday, Le Bouscat will play host to a pair of Listed races, the highlight being the Derby du Midi. Restricted to three year-olds, and run over 1900m, it is a coveted prize which frequently goes the way of trainer Jean-Claude Rouget, and this year he will saddle Al Barq, a decent colt but not on the face of it, the star of the field.

In fact, there appears to be considerable opposition, notably Sirtaki, bought by Team Valor at the end of last year, who boasts an unbeaten record in three starts over course and distance. Expected to be sent off with the lion’s share of support, he secured his latest victory by a two-lengths margin over the useful Duc De Kent, and Gaodio, and at the weekend they will meet off level weights.

Carlos Laffon-Parias will be represented by Sosino, who has never raced beyond a mile. Alban de Mieulle sends out Bariloche, a colt that debuted in France before being sent to Qatar where he won twice. Trained in Spain, All Iron may be short on experience but is not lacking in quality.

The Grand Prix de Bordeaux, for 4 and up, also run over 1900m, is the fourth leg of the Défi du Galop and headlining this second act is Watch Him, winner of the last two stages. Christophe Ferland’s five year-old will be taking on Wally, who finished second to him at Toulouse, but the tables could turn if the ground is not too soft.

Andreas Schütz’s Monty, who ran second in the 2022 edition, made an encouraging return at Chantilly in early April and hopes are high of a big run. Charlesquint, 3rd twelve months ago, Say Good BuyBolthole and Prince Anodin are all capable of finishing with a leg on the podium.
