Carberry, “there won’t be the pressure of a Grade 1”

Gran Diose set for seasonal return in Troytown

Second stage of the GSCP Masters series, the G.3 Prix Troytown is the second recognised prep for the Grand Steeple-chase de Paris [19 May] and Grand Diose returns to competition under a new jockey, Clément Lefebvre. We asked Louisa Carberry a few questions.

How is Grand Diose after last November’s Prix La Haye Jousselin second?

He’s very well. He’s in great form after having been given a break following the Haye Jousselin. He’s well in himself and up to the Prix Troytown task.

Why did you choose to return in a chase, unlike last season over hurdles?

For two reasons, even though we liked how he ran when 2nd to Carriacou in 2023. Firstly, I find he’s more at ease over fences and, more importantly, he’s changing jockey. I want Clément Lefebvre to discover him in a chase, but without the pressure of a Grade 1. They need to get to know each other and it’s only really over the big fences that they can do that.

Has Clément Lefebvre come to ride work at Senonnes?

I first have to say that James Reveley was superb with Grand Diose; he did a lot of work with the horse. One of the owners, Mr. Hinderze, wants a jockey for his horses and Clément was chosen. He gets to ride the horse until the Grand Steeple, since James will be on Il Est Français. We needed to find a solution. Sunday’s race is important so that they can work each other out. And yes, Clément has come to ride work and it has all gone well.

What is Grand Diose’s planned route to the Grand Steeple?

If Sunday’s race goes as hoped, and he makes a good comeback, we’ll go for the Prix Murat next. That’s the plan!
