Way To Paris Wins First Group One
29 June 2020
On Sunday in a thrilling battle along the St Cloud home straight a three horse contest took place in the Grand Prix de St Cloud and it was Way to Paris who outstayed his rivals to deliver a narrow win.
It may have only been a small field of five runners, but a better battle is rarely seen!
Allowed to settle at the rear of the field, jockey Pierre-Charles Boudot rode and timed Way to Paris to perfection enabling this seven-year-old entire to land his first Group One.
In the early stages Ziyad, slightly surprisingly, took the role as pacemaker and ran sectionals to ensure he could be competitive at the end of 2400m. Nagano Gold sat in second on the rail three lengths behind the leader. Christophe Soumillon gave the Czech Republic horse the perfect trail and at the 300m he looked to be travelling well. Inside the final 200m, when able to secure an inside run, he challenged for the lead however Ziyad was having none of that and kept going. Finally it was Way To Paris who stealthily moved up on the outside and with 100m to go it was a three horse fight all going head-for-head!
Known for his staying capabilities, Way To Paris was able to outrun his rival to score by a neck from Nagano Gold with a head to Ziyad.
The question to now ponder is – Can Way to Paris win the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe?
On that performance, he must come into calculations.
