Vincennes – Tuesday 16th February 2021

Race 6 - PRIX DE CAUSSADE – Mounted

Filwell (6)

The Pierre Levesque trained Filwell has proved a revelation since switched to mounted company and arrived here following two victories from his last three starts. He was slightly unlucky to not remain unbeaten in this discipline after a close one-length fourth last time, making up plenty of ground late on to finish closest at the line.

Unexposed in this discipline, the six-year-old quickly regained the winning thread with a smooth success at Vincennes on Tuesday. Positioned closer to the pace by rider Camille Levesque the pair settled nicely in third. Briefly looking as if he would be tight for room turning in, the gaps soon opened and the son of Qwerty produced a smart turn of foot to take full advantage. There was constant pressure applied down the straight by eventual runner-up Famous Port but Filwell always looked in control and was never asked for maximum effort.

There are plenty of reasons to believe that this six-year-old can continue his upward trajectory in mounted company. His sire Qwerty was perhaps not seen to best effect until later in his career, including when finishing a creditable third behind Ready Cash in the 2012 renewal of the G2 Prix Du Bourbonnais (2850m). It looks more than possible we can expect a similar career development from Filwell with late developing traits likely to have been passed down.
