Preview: Prix Grande Course De Haies D’Auteuil Hurdle

16 October 2020

We look at the contenders for the 2020 G1 Prix Grande Course De Haies D’Auteuil Hurdle (5100m) at Auteuil on Saturday…

El Gringo

El Gringo has produced seven victories in twenty-eight starts, most recently in the Listed Prix Hubert D'Aillieres (4300m) in March when three lengths clear of rival Agrapart. He was well-beaten behind L'autonomie in the G3 Prix De Compiegne (3900m) three weeks ago at Auteuil and may appreciate the return to a longer trip.

Agrapart is a UK raider who has been campaigned in France frequently across his career. He produced some respectable form last campaign including fourth at Ascot in the G1 Marsh Hurdle (4800m) when five lengths behind rival The Worlds End. The gelding could only manage eighth at Compiegne on his first start of the new season but has the potential to surprise.

Ramses De Taille

Ramses De Taille loves the rain and will relish any soft ground conditions. A seventeen-length winner of the G2 River Don Hurdle (4800m) at Doncaster, the grey followed up in February at Haydock Park in the G2 Albert Bartlett Prestige Novices' Hurdle (4800m). Ramses De Taille has previously placed in a Welsh Grand National (5900m) at Chepstow and may be a dark horse.

Corazones come into this event with multiple placings and produced a three-length victory when last seen at this venue over 3900m. It will be his first attempt at Grade One company which could be a concern.

The Worlds End

The Worlds End is a top-class staying hurdler who has a proven record at this grade, having won the G1 Marsh Hurdle (4800m) at Ascot in December. He tends to go well fresh and was successful in the G2 bet365 Hurdle (4800m) (Registered As The West Yorkshire Hurdle) at Wetherby at a similar time of year.

Galop Marin

Galop Marin produced a strong level of form last campaign including successes in the G3 Prix De Compiegne (3900m), G1 Grand Prix D'Automne (4800m) with multiple placings alongside. Out of his twelve wins, ten have come at Auteuil and the gelding will be fit following a nine length third to rival L'autonomie in this year’s renewal of the G3 Prix De Compiegne.

Clondaw Cian

Clondaw Cian is a UK raider who has been running in France more than England. Although only managing sixth on seasonal debut at Auteuil in the Listed Prix Hardatit (3600m), he has since produced a winning performance at Dieppe and placed. The level of competition may prove too much of a challenge.

Porto Pollo

From the Nicolle stable, Porto Pollo is a model of consistency and has not finished out of the frame in all starts this campaign with all efforts coming at G2 or G3 level. Eight lengths second behind rival L'autonomie in this year’s renewal of the G3 Prix De Compiegne (3900m), Porto Pollo could get involved in the closing stages.

Paul’s Saga

Paul’s Saga has been producing mixed form in recent months but has produced eight victories over his twenty-eight-start career. Although he was pulled up in the G3 Prix De La Gascogne (4500m), the gelding did finish a useful second behind rival Galop Martin in the G1 Grand Prix D'Automne (4800m) last year and would be interesting based on that form.

L'autonomie is the rising star of French hurdling with eleven wins from her fourteen runs. After victories in the G3 Prix Juigne (3600m) in March, G2 Prix Leon Rambaud (4300m), G3 Prix Hypothese (3800m) at Compiegne, she added an eighth straight win in the G3 Prix De Compiegne (3900m) at Auteuil and may prove difficult to beat.

Byzance Du Berlais

Although Byzance Du Berlais has only finished in the frame once since May 2019, the gelding did produce an eye-catching performance when third behind rival L’Autonomie in the G1 Prix Renaud Du Vivier (Grande Course De Haies Des 4 Ans) (3900m) in November. He’s been a little disappointing since and connections will be hoping a step up in trip sparks improvement.
