Amerique -10: a borderless quest

When Sweden’s Örjan Kihlström brought home Maharajah in the 2014 Prix d’Amérique, the smile that shone through his muddy face said it all. He had just fulfilled the dream of a lifetime, matching his 2003 Elitloppet victory, Scandinavia’s must-win equivalent. On his twelfth Amérique bid this year, Kihlström will be driving Solvato. His success last year added to a long list of winning foreign drivers. Since 1993, they have scored in 10 editions, notably with Belgian globetrotter Jos Verbeeck (4), Italian Giampaolo Minnucci (2) and Swede Helen Johansson (1), the only lady driver to have triumphed in the history of the race.

Amerique -11: Franck Nivard endeavouring to endorse Big Race stats

It will be a ninth Prix d’Amérique on January 25th for driver Franck Nivard. He has the best driver stats in the race since 2007 with a strike-rate of 62.5% in the first two! Twice in the first four with Kool du Caux (2007-2008), he struck gold in 2009 with a very tough win on Meaulnes du Corta, endorsing his reputation as a ‘catch-driver’.

Amerique -12: Uhlan du Val seeking revenge

Maturing nicely as a hardened 7yo, the very smart Uhlan du Val is in fine shape just at the right time as he gears up for a second crack at the Prix d’Amérique-Opodo. He began his career early on in one of the first races in Paris for 2yos at Enghien in August 2010, then went on to score the following spring in western France at Pontchâteau, not far from Nantes.
