Titans Cirrus des Aigles and Solow clash in Ispahan

A fantastic matchup awaits racegoers on Sunday at Longchamp in the Group 1 Prix d’Ispahan where Corine Barande-Barbe’s recent runaway Ganay winner Cirrus des Aigles will be taking on Freddy Head’s Dubai Turf hero Solow. The two super-geldings will be clashing for the first time, but only 3 others have taken up the challenge, notably last year’s Belmont Derby 4th Gailo Chop who has not been seen since his Group 2 Prix d’Ornano win at Deauville last August.

Ricou lands long-awaited Grand-Steeple on Milord Thomas

After a remarkable 20-year career, Jacques Ricou has at last added the most coveted of France’s jumps trophies to his impressive list of Auteuil classics. The 35-year-old rode a perfect race on board 6yo gelding Milord Thomas yesterday, not only providing jockey-turned-trainer Dominique Bressou with a first-time Grand-Steeple win, but also influential American owner Magalen Bryant who has invested so much in French jumps racing over the years.

Anglo-Irish armada hits Auteuil

Auteuil’s Grand Steeple weekend festival has attracted 7 Anglo-Irish raiders. Tomorrow, Saturday, English trainers Paul Nicholls and David Pipe will be represented by Silsol and Ballynagour in the Group 2 Prix La Barka (4300m, hurdles, 5yo+) while Ireland’s Willie Mullins will have Gitane du Berlais. The coalition has done particularly well in this event as Mullins won it in 2012 and 2014 with Thousand Stars (photo) and Nicholls landed the 2013 edition with Celestial Halo.
