Leading Contenders: Grand Prix de Belgique

16 January 2021

We look at some of the leading contenders for the sixth and final qualifier for the G1 Grand Prix d'Amérique (2700m) -  the G2 Prix de Belgique (2850m)...

Féerie Wood

Féerie Wood is one of the stand-out horses in her age group, having won the G1 Championnat Européen des 5 Ans (2100m) at Vincennes in October. Particularly excelling over the ‘speed’ distances, she added another big prize to her tally when scoring in the G2 Prix Tenor de Baune (2700m) with a kilometre rating of 1’12”8. The mare will appreciate the conditions of this particular ‘B’ race and can produce a big effort.

Billie de Montfort

Billie de Montfort is a proven contender at the top level and will be seeking automatic qualification for the G1 Grand Prix d'Amérique (2700m) by finishing in the top three. Despite some poor performances at Vincennes this season, she had a successful trip to Italy in December to win the Gran Premio Delle Nazioni (2250m) at Milan and can never be dismissed against this standard of competition.

Victor Ferm

Already qualified for the G1 Grand Prix d'Amérique (2700m) after a second in the G2 Prix du Bourbonnais (2850m), Victor Ferm has some really useful form in the book. He out-ran his odds that day to finish a head second behind Face Time Bourbon after gradually working his way up through the grades prior. He’s an interesting candidate.

Vitruvio

Vetruvio is an experienced European campaigner who out-ran all expectations to finish fifth in the 2020 renewal of the G1 Grand Prix d'Amérique (2700m) behind Face Time Bourbon. Although not running to that level since, he did score in the G1 Kymi Grand Prix at Kouvola in June and has been knocking on the door in some good events.

Délia du Pommereux

Délia du Pommereux hasn’t been seen in the winners’ enclosure since the 2019 renewal of the G2 Grand Prix du Bourbannais (2850m) however she can’t be dismissed entirely. There was a marked improvement in form when placing third behind Face Time Bourbon in the G2 Prix de Bourgogne (2100m) in early January and some of her best performances have come in these circumstances.

Feliciano

Feliciano is a six-year-old with plenty of potential and a proven record in elite company. Although he has failed to win over the 2020/21 Vincennes Winter Festival to date, he produced a bold performance when second in the G1 Championnat Européen des 5 Ans (2100m) behind Féerie Wood and can bounce back from a below par-effort in the G2 Prix Tenor de Baune (2700m).

Fakir du Lorault

This six-year-old son of Vaillant Cash went very close to being qualified for the G1 Grand Prix d'Amérique (2700m) when only beaten one length into fourth in Qualifier one - the G2 Prix de Bretagne (2700m). He continued to improve to be successful in the G2 Prix Doynel De Saint-Quentin (2850m) at the start of December when beating Féerie Wood.  A late disqualification in Qualifier 4 - the G2 Prix Tenor de Baune (2700m) is a slight concern but is high class at best form. Can be involved.

Moni Viking

This eight-year-old son of Maharajah is already qualified for the big event in a fortnight's time when third in qualifier 2 - the G2 Prix du Bourbonnais (2850m) a month ago only two lengths behind Face Time Bourbon. Sandwiched between that excellent outing are below par efforts in qualifier 1 - G2 Prix de Bretagne (2700m) and qualifier 5 - G2 Prix de Bourgogne (2100m) two weeks ago. Holds plenty of ability for the Pierre Vercruysse team to bounce back. Interesting.

Tony Gio

From the Sebastien Guarato stable, Tony Gio is one of two stable runners. Last years' runner up in the G1 Grand Prix De Paris (4150m) he has mixed form this Winter Meeting with a fair run when two lengths sixth in qualifier 1 - G2 Prix de Bretagne (2700m) in November. Since then, he struggled when disqualified at Milan (Itlay) in the Gran Premio Delle Nazioni (2250m). Racing barefoot here and may return to form. Not discounted.

Davidson du Pont

Last year, this Jean-Michel Bazire contender maintained excellent form with a close third in this race before a one length second to Face Time Bourbon in the G1 Grand Prix D'Amerique (2700m) ahead of a nose victory in the G1 Grand Prix De France (2100m). This Winter Meeting the eight-year-old has not been at that level, failing to fill a place. However, a fortnight ago he showed promise with a fair fourth only one length behind Face Time Bourbon in qualifier 5 - G2 Prix de Bourgogne (2100m). Could go one place better to confirm qualification for the anticipated event in two weeks time. Not out of this.
