Leading Contenders – G2 Prix de Bourgogne
02 January 2021
The next qualifier (fifth) for the G1 Grand Prix d'Amérique takes centre stage at Vincennes on Sunday 3 January with the running of the G2 Prix de Bourgogne over the Vincennes speed course of 2100m. With four weeks to the big day, who will gain qualification? And this race will also have a bearing on the G1 Grand Prix de France also run over this course and distance in February. We look at some of the leading contenders…
Face Time Bourbon
The star of the show can be expected to shine again at Vincennes and continue adding to his already impressive record. He has recorded twenty-seven victories from thirty-two starts. Last year’s G1 Grand Prix d'Amérique (2700m) winner is already qualified for the big event after success in the G2 Qualifier Two Prix du Bourbonnais (2850m) three weeks ago. Triumphs this season include the G1 Criterium Des 5 Ans (3000m), the G1 Prix De L'Etoile (2200m) and the G2 Prix Marcel Laurent (2100m). Drawn ideally in Gate 9, he is the standout choice in this race.
Davidson du Pont
Trained and driven by Jean-Michel Bazire is already one help but he is also is a top class eight-year-old. Finished tenth in this race twelve months ago but did then subsequently produce a one length second in the G1 Grand Prix d'Amérique. He backed that effort up when winning by a nose the G1 Grand Prix De France (2100m) three weeks later. Admittedly he has struggled this campaign with shoes on however now runs barefoot and this change makes him an interesting contender.
Délia du Pommereux
Another eight-year-old who is classy when at her best. This season has been mixed with plenty of outings from which to improve. In G2 Qualifier One Prix de Bretagne (2700m) she was disqualified in the home straight but was better when a good three length fourth in the G2 Qualifier Two Prix du Bourbonnais (2850m) behind Face Time Bourbon. If taking a further step forward might be involved.
Drôle de Jet
This eight-year-old son of Coktail Jet finished off strongly in the G2 Qualifier Two Prix du Bourbonnais (2850m) finishing three lengths fifth behind Face Time Bourbon three weeks ago. He was a busy horse last summer which included wins in the G2 Prix De Washington (1609m) at Enghien and the G2 Thierache Du Centre (1609m) at La Capelle. Has form of a one length second to last year’s G1 Grand Prix d'Amérique winner (Face Time Bourbon) back in June in the G1 Prix Rene Balliere (2100m) is eye catching. On that evidence is in the mix.
Fric du Chêne
Place may prove best for this six-year-old son of Nobody Du Chene. Franck Nivard steers which will help. Can be classy on best form including a fair nine length seventh of seventeen in the 2019 G1 Criterium Continental (2100m). Went well when up in grade last time producing a three length fifth in the G2 Qualifier Four Prix Tenor du Baune (2700m) seven days ago. If building on that in the space of a week may make the frame with all shoes off again.
Vivid Wise As
This Italian seven-year-old has a good record when travelling to France and notably from behind the mobile. His highlight victory was in the G1 Grand Criterium De Vitesse Nice-Matin (1609m) at Cagnes-Sur Mer in March. He followed this up at the same course and distance in August by the same margin of one length to take victory in summer feature, the G2 Grand Prix Du Departement Des Alpes-Mari (1609m). This was his last victory. Alessandro Gocciadoro is in good form which may help chances as he trains and steers. Racing consistently without winning in Italy, these conditions suit.
Billie de Montfort
One of three ten-year olds in the race who appears to have some chance of making the frame. Found success in this highlight race twelve months ago by a length ahead of Bahia Quesnot and Vivid Wise As. She doesn’t win often but did land success by defeating a quality field last start in the Gran Premio Delle Nazioni (2250m) from the autostart at Milan in early December. Reopposing rival Vivid Wise As could only manage eighth in the race. In 2020 she was runner up at La Capelle in the G2 Thierache Du Centre (1609m) in early July. Ran with credit last time in the G2 Qualifier One Prix de Bretagne (2700m) six weeks ago when a three length eleventh fading late after running prominently. Interesting candidate.
