Fortuna Tormenta Causes Upset in Prix Robert Papin

20 July 2020

A small group of four two-year-old faced the starter for the G2 Prix Robert Papin (1200m). This event is one of the traditional lead-up races for the G1 Prix Morny (1200m) at Deauville in August. In a thrilling three-way contest that went down to the line it was the outsider of the quartet Fortuna Tormenta who was able to stay on and prevail by a short-head from the odds-on favourite and previously unbeaten The Lir Jet with Tiger Tanaka a head away third. The first two are trained in the UK with the winner being supplemented for the race in a decision paying dividends. Connections indicated a return to Deauville for the ‘Morny’ might be on the cards.

Always on or near the lead, Fortuna Tormenta never gave up when headed by The Lir Jet and came again to have the bob of the head right on the line. The success gave the Richard Hannon trained runner's sire Acclamation his 54th stakes winner.

The two Listed races on the Chantilly card were won by the improving Onassis and Dariyma.

Onassis came from well back in the field securing a run close to the rail to outstay her rivals in the Prix de Bagatelle (1600m) and give Dubawi his 186th stakes winner. She was also a winner at Royal Ascot and is a half sister to Group One winner Line of Duty who was placed in two Group One contests in France as a three-year old.

Dariyma is raced by the Aga Khan and trained by Alain de Royer Dupre and her win came in the Prix de la Pepiniere over 2100m. This was a strong staying performance from this lightly raced four-year-old filly who has now won three of her five starts and based on this run, more wins can be expected. Dariyma is by the rarely seen in Europe stallion City Zip.
