Ebonite firmly on course for Grand Steeple
15 March 2020
Runner-up in the G.3 Prix Héros II and G.1 Prix La Haye Jousselin last autumn, Emmanuel Clayeux’s Ebonite was finally rewarded with a graced victory on Saturday when she secured the coveted G.3 Prix Troytown on her first start for over four months.
Always in the leading trio for much of the 4400m contest, Felix de Giles, who has partnered the mare since last September, took her to the front passing the stands for the second time, raised the tempo in the final stages and held off recent Prix Robert de Clermont-Tonnerre winner Poly Grandchamp by four lengths, landing just her fourth victory in nineteen races.
Cobra de Larré finished a courageous third, just three parts of a length adrift, Jubilatoire a similar distance away in fourth after having been kept off the pace for much of the race. 2018 Grand Steeple-Chase de Paris winner, On The Go, who was backing up just a week after having fallen in a similar event, appeared to lack condition and finished a well-beaten sixth of seven finishers. Second-favourite, Edgeoy, trailed in last.
