Mishriff Wins Dubai Sheema Classic
29 March 2021
John and Thady Gosden’s G1 Prix du Jockey Club (2100m) winner Mishriff capped off a marvellous few weeks, showing class and guts to take the G1 Dubai Sheema Classic (2400m) by a neck on Saturday.
Expertly handled by the superb twenty-one-year-old David Egan, the pair settled in last position from the widest draw in stall ten. A beautiful rhythm was maintained before being eased wide off the home bend where the four-year-old faced a strong challenge down the straight. This son of owner Prince Faisal’s dual French Group One winner Make Believe was forced to pull out all the stops by the Japanese pair of Chrono Genesis and Loves Only You.
In pursuit of more race honours Mishriff will now turn to Europe and with stamina queries quashed by Saturday’s 2400m victory, a tilt at the G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe (2400m) may well be on the cards.
It was a brilliant result for France in the G1 Arabian Dubai Kahayla Classic (2000m) as former French champion jockey Ioritz Mendizabal steered Deryan to victory.
The French-trained six-year-old Arabian made smooth progress at the 500m stage and took it up with 200m to go. The Didier Guillemin stable-favourite ran on strongly to record a cosy three-quarter-length success, lowering the track record in the process.
Hajres ran a respectable fourth place for Christophe Soumillon whilst the third of the French representatives, Hayyan, finished in tenth.
