History

Held on the banks of the River Allier, the first racing at Vichy took place in 1875. Over the next six years, seven meetings were organised with temporary seating built for the duration of the season. The popularity of Hippodrome de Vichy increased after WWII with nearly 770 horses visiting the track each year. In 1952, it became the property of the Société de Sport de France who built the current grandstand. The all-weather trotting track was added in 1965 and meetings gradually began to increase, split between trotting and Thoroughbred.

With the support of the PMU, Vichy was ready to host large events – the Festival du Galop was first held in July 1998 and the Center-Est Trotting Festival established in 2001. Over the last few years, the racetrack has upgraded the existing facilities including improving the soil on the turf track, repairing the foundations of the sand track and switching to digital HD broadcasting in 2020.
