Craon’s three glorious days of racing

2 September 2023

The spectacular and popular Cross-Country course at Craon

Craon, the historic, multi-disciplinary track in the west of France, stages around ten meetings per year, but the annual highlight is unquestionably Les Trois Glorieuses, three days of top-flight racing, and the coming meeting (2-4 September) marks the track’s 175th year of existence.

Saturday 2nd is principally dedicated to the flat with six races on the card, just one will be run over jumps. Feature races of the day are the Listed Critérium de l’Ouest, for two year-olds over 1650m, and the Listed Grand Prix de Craon (4yo+, 2400m), 11th stage of the popular Défi du Galop.

The following day comprises three races on the flat for thoroughbreds, a Grade 3 bumper for AQPS horses, and a pair of events over jumps. The remaining two trotting races will be run on turf over a central track reserved uniquely for the discipline.

Highlight of the weekend’s proceedings though is the famous Grand Cross de Craon (part of the Crystal Cup series), an €85,000 Listed, for 5yo+ and run over a gruelling 6000m. The course’s own particularities, and the race’s unique obstacles, have contributed to the prestigious race’s renown, and this year’s edition is unlikely to disappoint.

With flat duties out of the way, Monday’s activities are divided up into five trotting races and four over jumps. The final day sees the culmination of the coveted Trophée Vert, the Prix V & B, an €80,000 Gr.3 trotting race run on the turf.

To mark the racecourse’s anniversary, a book has been released to commemorate its history, and its launch coincides with Les Trois Glorieuses. Adding to the festival atmosphere will be live music, a host of diverting attractions, and an exhibition village. Glorious indeed.
