French Royal Ascot hopefuls

10 June 2023

Francis Graffard's The Fixer appears to be the main French hope for Royal Ascot

The month of June is the busiest of the year in Europe, with the Epsom and Chantilly classics, but also the Royal Ascot meeting which concludes on the eve of the Prix de Diane.

The elevated level of racing means a number of classy French horses have been entered for the five-day festival, although plans remain fluid until closer to the time.

On the Tuesday (20 June), Erevann and Facteur Cheval are in the Queen Anne Stakes, and Jérôme Reynier’s four year-old looks a distinct possibility given how well he ran in the Prix d'Ispahan. As for Rouget’s colt, he would be one of the favourites were he to travel, but we will know more in 48 hours.

Simca Mille has been entered to the Prince of Wales’s Stakes the following day, but having run just last weekend and returning to 2000m might make his task somewhat complicated. Fabrice Chappet’s Gregarina could run in the Gr.2 Duke Of Cambridge Stakes but she will need to up her game.

Thursday is Gold Cup day and Christophe Ferland has left in Big Call. At the time of writing, he looks a likely runner, especially since he will be carrying the colours of his trainer.

Francis Graffard intimated that The Fixer would take his chances in the Norfolk Stakes after having scored brilliantly at Chantilly last Sunday, and looks the best of the French prospects for the meeting.

Similarly victorious at Chantilly at the weekend, Ottery is unlikely to take up her entry in the Ribblesdale StakesVicious Harry, however, could well be declared for the Commonwealth CupMauricio Delcher-Sanchez not one to shy away from a challenge.

There are still five French fillies in the Coronation Stakes, although at this point it is hard to envisage any of them taking part.
