Ramatuelle to sparkle in quality Morny field

Ramatuelle, heading a French duo in Sunday's Prix Morny

There is never a dull weekend during the Deauville summer meeting and Sunday’s action makes the point, with two Gr.1s on the programme. The 1200m Prix Morny is the first occasion for 2 year-olds to meet at the highest level, while the Prix Jean Romanet pits 4 year-old fillies against older counterparts, over 2000m.

A brace of Gr.2s support the feature races; the Prix Kergorlay, and Prix de la Nonette, recently renamed the Prix Alec Head in honour of the great man who passed away last year.

Only once in the past eleven years has the Morny been won by a French-trained horse, Earthlight in 2019, and with just two runners in the field, it may seem a thankless task. That said, one of the local pair is Ramatuelle, who has shown enough class to win a race of this stature. By the remarkable stallion, Justify, she has captured the imagination with her superb Gr.3 Prix du Bois romp, before repeating in the Gr.2 Prix Robert Papin. Up against Christopher Head’s filly is a strong foreign contingent, including the likes of River Timber, Elite StatusJasourValiant Force, and Vandeek.

Won by some high-class mares such as CoronetAudarya and Grand Glory, the Prix Jean Romanet is a more open affair.

André Fabre sends out Mqse De Sévigné, winner of the Prix Rothschild earlier in the meeting, who will not be inconvenienced by the longer trip. Francis Graffard’s Darkaniya has gone from strength to strength and has earned the right to compete in this company.

British opposition will be represented by Hughie Morrison's One For Bobby, and the good Via Sistina. Irish connections will be counting on Trevaunance and Above The Curve, who showed her form at Goodwood.
